Standard One - Strategic Leadership: School executives will create conditions that result in strategically re-imaging the school’s vision, mission, and goals in the 21st century. Understanding that schools ideally prepare students for an unseen but not altogether unpredictable future, the leader creates a climate of inquiry that challenges the school community to continually re-purpose itself by building on its core values and beliefs about its preferred future and then developing a pathway to reach it.
A) School vision, Mission and Strategic Goals
The school’s identity, in part, is derived from the vision, mission, values, belief and goals of the school, the processes used to establish these attributes, and the ways they are embodied in the life of the school community
Hope Valley Elementary School Vision Statement Vision: Hope Valley will be celebrated as one of the most diverse, highest achieving, elementary schools in the state of NC
Hope Valley Elementary School Mission Statement Mission: HVE creates a safe and supportive environment for a diverse learning community that excels at meeting the individual needs of all students. We inspire learning. We facilitate and celebrate growth. We nurture the needs of the whole child. We support and encourage active collaboration among school, home, and community. We trust our highly qualified staff to set high expectations while maintaining rigorous instruction for all students. While planning for the Title 1 events for the year, I strategically considered the needs for families students that would support the school's mission and vision after being virtual for most of last year. These guiding principles lay the groundwork for how parents and staff interact with the students in the building. Seamless alignment between our mission and vision to the instruction, culture, and school processes is evident at every meeting, and is referenced continually. I also made sure to maintain a focus on the vision and strategic goals throughout the school year when considering Title 1 events. A school leader is the primary community-facing spokesperson for a school's mission and vision and must be prepared to share it in varied situations. |
B) Leading Change
The school’s identity, in part, is derived from the vision, mission, values, belief and goals of the school, the processes used to establish these attributes, and the ways they are embodied in the life of the school community.
When I got to HVES, one of the biggest complaints from teachers was the lack of time. They felt as if the schedule they were using did not allow them enough time get to every subject the way they needed to. Using our SIT, TAC, school vision and values, I created a master schedule that maximized core instruction and minimized transitions. This master schedule will be used next year, and will hopefully result in improved achievement for all students.
